Can anyone take part?

Anyone who pays tax through PAYE (including people on company pension schemes) and whose employer is registered with a ‘Payroll Giving Agency’ (PGA) can take part.

To find out if your employer is registered you can,-

  • Ask your payroll department.
  • Phone Iain Mcwhirter at SMNDA (0141 945 1077).

What are the benefits of Payroll Giving?

All money donated through your payroll is donated before deduction of tax. This means that SMNDA gets more money from your donation because it also gets the tax that you would have paid for the donated amount.

When setting up and changing your donations your point of contact will be your payroll department. Employees of organisations with less than 500 staff who are newly registered for payroll giving (see below) will have their donations matched by the Home Office up to £10 per month for 6 months.

There are no Direct Debit or Standing Order forms to complete.

Table 1 – Monthly Donation Values

Deduction from your take-home pay

Gross Donation to SMNDA (inc 22% tax)

Home Office monthly top up for first 6 months*

Value to SMNDA with Home Office top-up

£3.90 £5.00 £5.00 £10.00
£5.00 £6.41 £6.41 £12.82
£7.80 £10.00 £10.00 £20.00
£10 £12.82 £10.00 £22.82

* Applicable to donors who make their first donation in or before September 2006 only. Donors signing up after September 2006 will receive top-ups only for those donations made in or before March 2007.

For example, - a reduction of £7.80 per month in your take home pay will be worth £20.00 to SMNDA for the first six months, and £10.00 per month thereafter.

Is Payroll Giving the best way to support SMNDA?

SMNDA needs a regular income in order to plan ahead. People who use payroll giving to send regular donations provide the security that we need to develop the services that we provide.

Money donated through your payroll has very low associated administration costs. This helps us to operate cost-effectively, and allows us to make the best use of your money.

Many employers want to encourage participation and will therefore pay your administration charges, and/or match your donations.

Will my employer be affected?

Your employer will need to be registered with a Payroll Giving Agency (PGA). Registering with a PGA is a simple process. Home Office grants of £300 - £500 can be claimed by organisations with 1-499 employees that set up payroll giving schemes between April 2004 and December 2006. Administering payroll giving is extremely easy as all modern PAYE systems have a built in payroll giving facility.

How much can I give?

There is no minimum monthly donation, but donors usually give at least £5.00 per month. You can change your chosen charity or charities, or stop your donations, at any time by completing one simple form and passing it to your payroll department.

Are there any hidden charges?

Payroll Giving Agencies charge minimal administration fees. Give As You Earn is the largest PGA in the UK and is run by the Charities Aid Foundation. They make an administration charge of 4% (minimum 25p) on your donation.

Will I be limited to SMNDA or can I give to any charity?

You can donate to any registered UK charity or organisation recognised by the Inland Revenue as charitable. You can donate to up to 8 different charities at any one time.

Your employer may have a selected charity or group of charities that they support, but you are not obliged to abide by their recommendation.

Can I donate anonymously?

Your employer does not need to know which charities you are donating to. The charity that you are giving to does not need to know who you are.

How will I know that SMNDA has received my donation?

All payroll giving deductions will be shows on your payslip. We will send you our quarterly magazine ‘Aware’, and our annual report (unless you ask us not to). Your chosen charities will receive monthly statements detailing all of their donors. If you contact us we will be able to confirm receipt of your donations.
